Vino

Si va a bere un bicchiere di vino? Andiamo in Piazza San Francesco, nel centro storico. L'enoteca "Mi manda Picone" è un posto accogliente con una discreta selezione di vini di qualità e ottimi salumi e formaggi. D'inverno è piacevole fermarsi a bere del vino seduti su botti di legno e crcondati da bottiglie.

Shall we have a glass of wine? Let us go then in Piazza San Francesco, in the old town. “Mi Manda Picone” is a cosy wine bar with a fair choice of quality wines and excellent cold-cuts and cheeses. In winter it is quite nice to stop there to have a glass of wine sitting on wooden barrels, surrounded by bottles.

Dalla finestra

Oggi voglio mostrare un altro spettacolo che mi si è presentato davanti, un pomeriggio come tanti, verso le 18.00, guardando dalla finestra del mio ufficio...i colori di un cielo africano e le sagome intriganti di gente che si muove dietro le finestre verdi di un edificio qualunque...

Today I would like to share another wonder I saw, in an afternoon like many, at about 6pm, looking out of my office window… the colours of an Africa-like sky and the intriguing profiles of people moving behind the green windows of an ordinary building…

Monte Pellegrino

Monte Pellegrino, il promontorio più bello del mondo...è storicamente uno dei simboli di Palermo, ed effettivamente da qualsiasi parte della città lo si guardi, qualsiasi faccia rocciosa mostri...è veramente bello.
In cima al promontorio si trova il Santuario di Santa Rosalia, la nostra patrona.
Percorrendo in macchina via dei Cantieri, per andare verso Mondello, si vede questo scorcio con il Castello Utveggio.

Monte Pellegrino, the most beautiful cape in the world… historically it is one of the symbols of Palermo and as a matter of fact it does not matter from which part of the city you look at it from, or which of its rocky faces it is showing you: it is utterly beautiful. On the top of the mountain there is the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, our patron saint. Driving along via dei Cantieri, going to Mondello, you will get this view, including Castello Utveggio.

Giardino della fonderia

E' stato restaurato il Giardino dell'Ex Fonderia alla Cala, dietro Piazza Marina. Di sera l'illuminazione lo rende un luogo suggestivo, speriamo che venga utilizzato nel modo migliore. Per adesso è chiuso, ne riparleremo quando organizzeranno il primo evento...

The Garden of the Ex-Foundry of the Cala, behind Piazza Marina. At night its lights make it a very evocative place, I just hope it will be used in the best possible way. It is closed at present, I am going to write more about it on the occasion of the first event there…

Beethoven

Ieri sera, al Teatro Politeama di Palermo, sono andata a vedere il concerto dell' Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana che eseguiva la Sinfonia n.5 e n.7 di Beethoven, diretta da Felix Krieger.
Mi riprometto di andarci più spesso...il biglietto per il loggione costa soltanto 5€...meno di un aperitivo!

Yesterday night, at the Teatro Politeama in Palermo, I enjoyed a concert by the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, playing Symphony 5 and 7 by Beethoven, directed by Felix Krieger. I tell myself I should go there more often… the tickets for the gallery are just € 5,00… less that a glass of wine!

Skyline

All'altezza del Foro Italico, l'uno di fronte all'altro, stanno due simboli della condizione della città di Palermo: il Nautoscopio e la Tirrenia bruciata...uno a terra, l'altro in mare, entrambi immobili e abbandonati.
La Tirrenia è una carcassa che ha subito un incendio circa 6 mesi fa, e da quel giorno è entrata a far parte dello skyline della città; il Nautoscopio è una costruzione particolare, una nave sospesa, bello a vedersi, potenzialmente interessante, se non fosse abbandonato. Oggi fa parte anche lui dello skyline della città, ma è rimasto vuoto.

The two symbols of the situation Palermo is in are there, one in front of the other, on the Foro Italico promenade: the Nautoscopio and the Tirrenia wreck. One is on land, the other at sea, they both are still and abandoned. The Tirrenia is a the shell of a ship that caught fire about 6 months ago, and has become part of the city skyline since. The Nautoscopio is a very special building, a suspended ship, a beautiful sight, with a great potential, if only it had not been deserted. It is now part of the city skyline too, but is it another empty shell.

In Piazza Pretoria

In Piazza Pretoria, alle due estremità degli scalini che portano in Via Maqueda, fanno la guardia due leoni. Sono bellissimi, stanno seduti con lo sguardo fiero ed i muscoli in tensione.
Il problema è che il loro manto ha assunto un colore non ben identificabile...perchè quella via, che dovrebbe essere chiusa al traffico perchè stracolma di monumenti e chiese, è invece un asse centrale attraversato tutto il giorno dalle auto...

In Piazza Pretoria, at the two sides of the steps leading to via Maqueda, there are two lions guarding over the street. They are beautiful, sitting there with their proud gaze and tense muscles. The real issue is that their colour has turned quite strange: as a matter of fact this street that should be pedestrian as it is filled up with monuments and churches but on the contrary it is crossed by cars all day long…
